Custom home with large roof overhang for natural shade
The Binnacle

Sweet Sparkman Architecture & Interiors is proud to showcase The Binnacle, a remarkable waterfront home designed by Jerry Sparkman. This 2,500-square-foot residence reflects a seamless blend of art and practicality, designed to meet the unique vision of owners Diane DiCarlo and Jeanne Leszcyzynski, who sought a home that was both a “piece of art” and a fully functional living space.

The Binnacle is a testament to modern architectural trends that prioritize design, sustainability, and efficiency over sheer size. The home’s abstract, glass-enclosed design was inspired by the contrast of white geometric volumes against the vibrant Florida sky, offering breathtaking views of both the bayou and the mangroves.

One of the most striking features is its passive solar design. The sweeping roofline, not only a bold architectural statement, serves a critical function by shielding the home’s expansive glass windows from direct sunlight, thus maintaining cooler interior temperatures and reducing energy costs. Sparkman’s commitment to sustainable architecture is evident in every detail, striving for net-zero energy efficiency through thoughtful design elements.

The residence’s cohesive design extends beyond its structure, integrating the exterior, interior, and landscaping into a fluid and harmonious environment. This design philosophy continues with the outdoor spaces, including a small pool and a separate guest room with a discreet entrance, maintaining clean architectural lines.

A key highlight of The Binnacle is its innovative curved metal roof, engineered with six different radiuses ranging from 212 feet to 8 feet, and constructed using premium aluminum to withstand Florida’s harshest weather conditions. Partnering with Sheffield Metals International ensured the use of top-tier materials, including a PVDF-coated finish in Regal White for superior energy efficiency and corrosion resistance.

The home’s construction involved meticulous craftsmanship, with on-site panel fabrication allowing for precise measurements and immediate adjustments, further minimizing the project’s carbon footprint. Every aspect of The Binnacle speaks to the excellence of its team, including Dean Thompson, Inc., Avery Roofing, and Integrity Metals.

The Binnacle stands as a life-size sculpture that captivates passersby, reflecting Sweet Sparkman’s dedication to innovative architecture and sustainable living.
