Sweet Sparkman is pleased to share a construction update for the Sarasota County History Center and Fruitville Library Expansion. The project recently reached an important milestone with the installation of the tilt wall panels, bringing the form and scale of the new facility clearly into view.

Tilt wall panels installed at the Sarasota County History Center and Fruitville Library Expansion construction site in Sarasota, Florida.

Located at 100 Apex Road in Sarasota, the project includes a new County History Center and an expansion of the existing Fruitville Library. Tandem Construction is serving as the contractor for the project, helping bring the new civic and cultural facility from design into construction. Together, the facilities are designed to strengthen public access to local history, archival collections, research resources, cultural programming, and expanded library services.

The History Center is planned as an approximately 30,000 square foot facility that will support genealogy collections, local history materials, digitization labs, exhibition space, meeting rooms, research areas, and specialized archival storage. The Fruitville Library expansion is planned at approximately 8,500 square feet and will include new and renovated spaces for a dedicated Creation Station, young adult room, redesigned youth area, program room, and additional conference space with collaborative technology.

The installation of the tilt walls marks a visible step forward in the construction process. As the building envelope begins to take shape, the project’s future role as a public resource becomes clearer. The new History Center will provide residents, researchers, students, and visitors with improved access to Sarasota County’s historical collections while creating flexible spaces for learning, preservation, and community engagement.

The design also reflects Sarasota County’s goals for sustainability, resiliency, and long-term public value. The project is intended to incorporate strategies supporting LEED certification, the 2030 Challenge, County green building resolutions, and landscape requirements related to irrigation and plant material. These goals align with the facility’s civic purpose, supporting both the preservation of the past and the building’s long-term performance.

As construction continues, the project represents an investment in both cultural infrastructure and public access. The History Center and library expansion will create a more complete civic destination, pairing archival preservation with active public programming and expanded library resources.

Sweet Sparkman looks forward to sharing additional progress as the Sarasota County History Center continues to take shape.
