The Boathouse is a contemporary addition to a 1950s-era boathouse on the north end of Longboat Key, overlooking Sarasota Bay. Designed as a modest, elevated structure, the two-bedroom, two-bathroom home emphasizes simplicity, transparency, and resilience. Clad in durable cypress siding, the building’s open design frames views through to the bay while minimizing its footprint on the site. Elevation not only provides flood protection but also contributes to the home’s light, airy presence. Completed in under a year, the project includes site enhancements such as a pool and landscaping, resulting in a refined coastal retreat that balances durability with understated elegance.

Carlos Flórez, Associate AIA
Born and raised in Bogotá, Carlos Flórez earned his Bachelor of Architecture degree from the National University of Colombia and gained his initial professional experience working in residential and commercial projects. During the last 14 years, Carlos has been working in Sarasota on numerous commercial projects, including the addition and renovation of the Florida Studio Theatre, several residential projects from single-family homes to condominiums, and the improvement throughout the state of multiple facilities of the Florida Department of Health.
Carlos enjoys movies, history, traveling, and swimming. He loves spending time at home with his wife and their two daughters.
Hannah Boehmer, AIA
As Design Director, Hannah brings a thoughtful, site-responsive approach to architecture that prioritizes clarity, sustainability, and a deep respect for existing structures. Originally from Cocoa Beach, Hannah earned her Master of Architecture from the University of South Florida in 2014. Her early exposure to construction—watching her parents transform their 1950s block home—sparked a lasting fascination with how buildings evolve over time. Today, that interest shapes her passion for reimagining and adapting space rather than replacing it.
Her design work emphasizes climate-responsive strategies tailored to Florida’s coastal environment and is guided by a belief that architecture should balance beauty with function. Hannah’s academic and professional accolades include a 2019 AIA Florida Theoretical and Research Design Merit Award for her graduate thesis on Florida vernacular architecture, and a second-place finish in the 2021 Architecture Sarasota Tiny House Competition.
Outside the studio, Hannah is an avid reader, writer, and member of the Junior League of Sarasota—a training organization dedicated to volunteerism and women’s professional development. These creative and civic pursuits offer her a valuable perspective on design’s role within broader communities.
