Strandhus is the transformation of a 1950s home on Lido Shores, envisioned as a modern, private retreat where architecture and landscape merge into a unified experience. The original renovation preserved the existing footprint, allowing all primary living spaces to remain at ground level. This approach created a fluid relationship between the interior and the surrounding courtyards, using water as a central landscape element to connect east and west outdoor rooms with interior gathering spaces. This first phase received the 2014 Florida AIA Merit Award of Excellence for Renovations and Additions.
Strandhus II, completed in 2018, expanded the vision when the adjacent property became available. The addition—connected to the original home via a glass hallway—was conceived around the owner’s desire for a tranquil reading space inspired by a “top 100 books” bucket list. Echoing the design principles of the original renovation, the new structure integrates seamlessly into the landscape, with sliding doors that open to lush gardens and extend the home’s indoor-outdoor experience.
Together, these structures form a cohesive architectural composition rooted in landscape, restraint, and continuity.
