PARKS: Nokomis, Florida
In 2008 Sweet Sparkman Architects was contracted to add 32 targets to the Sarasota County Law Enforcement Gun Range located at 3445 Rustic Road in Nokomis, Florida. The firm's site plan included: the addition of 225'-0" of target range with a 30'-0" tall horizontal bullet catcher; the realignment of the service road; and new 16'-0" tall free-standing masonry screen walls at the east and west target boundaries.
Sweet Sparkman was also responsible for the design of the covered shelter and storage building. In response to a very limited budget, the team chose a simple palette of widely used materials to include pre-engineered wood trusses, standing seam metal roof and wall panels, cementitious board on board siding and sonotube formed concrete columns. These materials were left unfinished and arranged to express the simple purpose of each of the building parts.
